District Expectation:
Students will recognize and draw conclusions about why major United States landmarks, historic sites, and The Star Spangled Banner are important.

Our Essential Question:  Why are certain people, places, and events recognized as more important than others? (Standard 3)

In order to answer the essential question I wanted to give students the opportunity to investigate national monuments.  We started with print and digital resources.

Students
chose a
National
Monument
and then
became an
expert on
that
monument

Most Students chose to make moels with facts on large white paper.

Students were so excited to share as experts about their chosen monument.

Since many of the National Monuments about which students chose to become experts were in Washington DC we decided to take a virtual field trip to Washington D.C.

The first step was to pack a suitcase.  Our class decided we should pack for a two day stay.

I designed
airline tickets

I set the chairs up in rows of four facing the smart board and taped seat assignments on the chairs , like A4 or E3. Students had to pass through "security", check their bag, have their ticket scanned and enter the airplane. After landing in Washington, D.C. our plane magically turned into a tour bus and the virtual tour began with projected images on the smart board.
